WINFAP – FEH 2

WINFAP-FEH is the tool for applying FEH statistical procedures for flood frequency estimation in the UK. The methods used are described in Volume 3 of the FEH Handbook.

See below for what's new in WINFAP FEH 2.

With this software you can quickly estimate a flood peak of a given rarity at both gauged and ungauged sites:

  • At the gauged site you can apply of flood frequency analysis techniques to either gauged annual maximum and/or peaks-over-threshold flood peak data where available.
  • At the ungauged site you can automatically create a pooling group of similar gauged sites based on comparison of FEH CD-ROM catchment descriptors. Flood frequency curves are then created through analysis of the pooling group flood peak data.

WINFAP-FEH 2 incorporates the latest advances in flood research and the most up to date flood peak and catchment data. This will give you the best estimate of flood risk currently available.

Within this flexible software package you can:

  • implement the methods described in Volume 3 of the Flood Estimation Handbook, where defaults have been set with these techniques in mind
  • access the FEH flood peak dataset which is automatically installed with the software
  • import additional data from the FEH CD-ROM, from csv, cd and cd2 files and by manual entry
  • inspect and edit data
  • fit statistical frequency distributions and construct confidence intervals for the single site
  • create and adapt appropriate pooling-groups, combine data within groups and perform diagnostic analysis of the pooling-groups.
  • fit statistical frequency distributions to pooled AM data.
  • create and save a project file containing a list of loaded stations with details of pooling-groups and user adjusted settings to allow further analyses at a later time.
  • make adjustment for urbanised catchments
  • store any additional observed AM and POT data
  • display results in tabular and graphical formats.

What's new with WINFAP-FEH 2

WINFAP-FEH 2 was released in 2007 and offers significant advances in software functionality and ease of use. These enhancements are detailed below.

Up to date HiFlows-UK data provided

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 includes the most recent HiFlows-UK data.

Suitability

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 highlights the suitability of a gauging station for pooling and for QMED estimation based on the HiFlows-UK suitability. This gives more flexibility in the creation and review of pooling groups. Station data files also no longer require three separate folders.

Compatibility with FEH CD-ROM 2

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 reads data from catchment descriptor files exported from both Version 1 and Version 2 of the FEH CD-ROM.

Gauging station data files within new format

  • Catchment descriptor files are now provided in the cd2 format, which includes additional descriptors, such as URBEXT2000. These files have been produced with FEH CD-ROM 2 and provide improved catchment areas and descriptor values. Version 1 catchment descriptor files (cd) are also provided.

New urban adjustment methodology for URBEXT2000

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 includes new equations for calculating new urban adjustment factors for the URBEXT2000 catchment descriptor. This new methodology developed for DEFRA was required as URBEXT2000 is not directly comparable to the earlier URBEXT1990.

Choice of catchment descriptor files

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 gives you the option of using either cd (FEH CD-ROM Version 1) or cd2 (FEH CD-ROM 2) files. Within the cd2 option, you can select either the URBEXT1990 or URBEXT2000 values when creating pooling groups and applying urban adjustments.

Improved manipulation of pooling-groups

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 enables you to add, move, or remove station records at any stage without having to recreate a default pooling-group.

Improved definition of POT period of record

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 automatically reconciles POT period of record information and alerts you that this has been done. You can then choose whether to save these changes to the station file.

Auditing of adjustments to URBEXT

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 includes an audit trail of adjustments to URBEXT values. The ‘Construct Flood Frequency Curve’ dialog states the original value, the current value and its origin. You can save this information in the catchment descriptor file for future use.

Estimated and observed QMED ratios displayed

  • WINFAP-FEH 2 provides both an estimate of QMED from catchment descriptors and from observed data (where data are available and the site is essentially rural). This enables the 'data transfer' procedure to be carried out more easily.

WINFAP-FEH 2 is available for purchase/upgrade from our online shop. Version 1 licence holders can purchase WINFAP-FEH 2 at reduced rates with provision of Version 1 licence details. A discounted educational version is also available for teaching purposes at recognised academic institutions. New commercial purchases include six months support and maintenance from the date of purchase. Additional support and maintenance is provided to all users for an annual fee.
