WINFAP-FEH | ReFH | Low flows and water resources | Introduction to hydrology

Low flows and water resources

The next one-day course will be held on 12 October 2010 in Glasgow, immediately preceding the British Hydropower Association Annual Conference 2010 at the same location. Please download the WHS Software training booking form and use it to reserve a place.

Course outline

Participants will be introduced to the theory of low flow hydrology, with an emphasis on the estimation of Flow Duration Curve (FDC) statistics from both gauged data and within ungauged catchments. Methods for estimating the FDC from short record flow data and spot gauging data will also be taught. Hands-on experience will be provided using the LowFlows software package (the UK standard method for estimating flow duration statistics within ungauged catchments) and software for analysing gauged flow data.

Course topics covered will include:

  • The estimation low flow measures from gauged data:
    - Flow duration curves
    - Base Flow Index
  • Estimating flow duration curves within the ungauged catchment - the LowFlows software
  • The impacts of water use and hydrometric uncertainty on low flow measures
  • Making maximum use of short record flow measurements and spot gaugings to improve flow estimation in ungauged catchments.

Who should attend?

This course will particularly benefit practitioners who wish to gain practical experience and understanding of the hydrology of low flows and flow estimation within both gauged and ungauged catchments. This course will be valuable to hydropower engineers and hydrologists requiring robust assessments of resource availability and variability in catchments with limited or no measured flow data.

Tutor

Tuition will be provided by WHS Managing Director Dr Andy Young, a recognised national and international expert in the hydrology of low flows, particularly flow estimation at the ungauged site. He has extensive experience working within the UK and European water industry in both a research and consultancy capacity. He has led the development of the LowFlows software since its inception and has authored chapters in the World Meteorological Office Manual on Low-flow Estimation and Prediction on the estimation of low flows in ungauged and artificially influenced catchments.
