Course outline

This two-day introductory course teaches all the key principles of hydrology.

Topics covered will include:

  • The Hydrological cycle
  • The concept of the water balance
  • Processes and measurement of precipitation, evaporation and soil moisture
  • Catchment descriptors for estimating flows at an ungauged site
  • River Flow: Stream gauging and gauging networks
  • Introduction to low flow analysis: the flow duration curve
  • Introduction to flood frequency analysis

Who should attend?

This course will provide a valuable foundation for new graduates and professionals moving into the field of hydrology. No prior knowledge of hydrology is required.

Tutor

Tuition will be provided by WHS Managing Director Dr Andy Young, a recognised national and international expert in the hydrology of low flows, particularly flow estimation at the ungauged site. He has extensive experience working within the UK and European water industry in both a research and consultancy capacity. He has led the development of the LowFlows software since its inception and has authored chapters in the World Meteorological Office Manual on Low-flow Estimation and Prediction on the estimation of low flows in ungauged and artificially influenced catchments.
