Hydrometric analysis software

General

Overview

HydroTools is a software package providing a comprehensive suite of tools for analysing river flow data to support both water resource and flood management design. The software presents information in graphical and tabulated formats that can readily be exported from the system. The software also provides a convenient database for archiving hydrometric data that is ideally suited to the needs of the consultancy industry.

Target users

The system is designed for use by private consultants and public authorities at local, regional and national levels. HydroTools supports the fields of water resource management, drought analysis and flood hydrology.

Functionality

HydroTools is a modular system consisting of core data management modules and analysis modules:

  • Data Management Modules – Enable daily mean flow data and maxima/minima series to be imported and stored in the database archive from simple file formats (.txt, .csv, .xls, and .mdb). Edit facilities for correcting erroneous data and infilling gaps. An interactive hydrograph visualisation tool is provided to enable inter-catchment comparison and assist with infilling procedures.
  • Analysis Modules – Enable widely used analysis techniques to be applied to data stored in the database archive including:

Graphics and data generated by the Analysis Modules can be cut and pasted into standard spreadsheet and word processing packages.

Additional Analysis Modules planned for the next versions of HydroTools are designed to meet the requirements of specific Users and include; hydropower analysis, rating curve analysis and intelligent data interpolation/extrapolation using rainfall runoff models.

Technical

System Specification

The suggested minimum specifications required to run the HydroTools software satisfactorily are:

  • Intel or equivalent PC with CD drive
  • Pentium IV 1.2 GHz
  • 512Mb
  • 20Mb free drive space
  • Monitor equivalent to XGA:1024 X 768 at 8 bit 256 colours
  • Microsoft Windows Win98, Win 2000/XP

Input data

Minimum input data requirements are time-series of daily mean flow data in a standard file format (.txt, .csv, .xls, and .mdb). Maxima and minima series derived externally to HydroTools can readily be imported as .txt, .csv or .xls files.  Note the length of record available will limit some analysis, for example flood frequency analysis.

Outputs

Outputs from the various analysis algorithms are typically in the form of graphical display (hydrographs, flow duration curves, flow frequency curves, base flow hydrographs) and corresponding tabulated data. The tabulated data sheets and graphics can be readily exported to spreadsheet and word processor packages.

Access

Deployment

The HydroTools software is deployed as either an evaluation or a complete licensed version.

  • Evaluation Version – HydroTools (v1.0E)
  • Licensed Version – HydroTools (v1.0)

The Evaluation Version of HydroTools is available to enable full functionality of the Analysis Modules of the software to be assessed by individual Users. The evaluation version contains a single pre-loaded hydrograph and is time limited for a period of 10 days. There is no licence fee associated with the evaluation version, however, Users are required to register their details.

The Licensed Version of HydroTools enables the User to utilise the Data Management Modules to load and store any number of hydrographs within the database archive structure. These hydrographs can then be analysed using the Analysis Modules and outputs created. There is a licence fee associated with this version of the software.
