This month we welcome Catherine, our new flood consultant who has joined our Cardiff office. Catherine has experience in wastewater network modelling, assessment of flood risk and in flood modelling. Previously with Waterman Development & Transport Ltd., she also has experience producing Environmental Impact Assessments and drainage strategy reports. In her spare time Catherine is also a river clean-up volunteer in the South Wales area and is Treasurer of the Cardiff Rivers Group.

Our Environment and Field Services teams are busily working away this month all over the UK on a range of hydropower projects. From Environmental Impact Assessment work in Devon for 100kW schemes through to ecology, hydrology and CAR application assistance for a 2.5MW Hydropower Scheme in the extreme North of Scotland.

WHS are very pleased to now be working with Western Power Distribution South Wales to help protect electricity supply in the South Wales region. Paul Blackman, who heads up the flood risk services team here at WHS, says “we’re delighted to be able to assist Western Power Distribution protect essential electricity supplies and we look forward to working with the team there to achieve their goals”.

It's all 'GO Wales' in WHS Cardiff this month. This Welsh Government sponsored scheme makes it possible for graduates to develop their careers in Wales through quality work experience with businesses. The scheme, managed by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, receives funding from the Welsh Government and the European Union Social Fund. We welcome Sam Jones who joins WHS Cardiff to share his marketing expertise with us this month.

With the expansion of our Stirling office operations, WHS is happy to announce that Finlay Leask has joined our team in Scotland. Finlay's principal role is the installation and maintenance of gauging stations around the UK; providing quality assurance of data as well as analysis and reporting on results drawn from these stations. WHS releases Hydra 2 to provide estimates the annual power that can be generated by a hydropower scheme for a variety of turbine configurations. Hydra 2 methods encompass contemporary turbine envelopes and efficiency curves and enables penstock head-losses to be estimated. Variable environmental flow conditions can be simulated, consistent with trends in UK regulation.

WHS releases CatchmentsUK to provide a quick and reliable method for defining catchment boundaries within a GIS interface. CatchmentsUK uses contemporary digital terrain data for Great Britain and the automatically defined catchment boundaries can be exported as CSV files or ESRI shapefiles. CatchmentsUK is available for lease under licence for a period of up to three years and licensees have free access to all upgrades and functional enhancements.

We have relocated our offices in Scotland to Touch Business Centre on the beautiful Touch Estate in Stirling. Technical Director Dr Andrew Black says, “Our decision to relocate our offices to Stirling was motivated by our desire to have an office that was more centrally located and could better accommodate our growing business needs.” When searching for an office, the new Senior Consultant, Olivia Burns, responsible for the operation of the new Stirling office, said “We looked at a lot of offices within the Stirling area, but it soon became apparent that the friendly and bespoke service offered at Touch, in such a beautiful and unique setting, meant that it was the right choice for us. We really do feel lucky to work here.”

WHS releases LowFlows 2 – a functionally rich software system for estimating both natural flow duration statistics and the impacts of water use. Free to all existing LowFlows lease holders, LowFlows 2 incorporates the latest science developments in flow estimation in the ungauged site. Specifically, LowFlows 2 includes updates to the hydrological models to incorporate the latest gauged river flow data, incorporation of local data gauges and extended coverage to include Northern Ireland. All current LowFlows lease holders will recieve a free upgrade to LowFlows 2.

WHS opens its third UK office in Cardiff to meet the growing demand for our services in Wales. Located in the Cathedral Road district of the city the office is headed up by Paul Blackman who says “Our new Cardiff office allows us to provide services to the doorstep of clients in Wales and the west of England. Located in the centre of the city, the office is a pleasant ten-minute stroll from Cardiff Central station and has ample parking for clients.”

We are extremely pleased to announce that Paul Blackman has joined WHS from Halcrow to lead our flood risk team working out of our three offices across the UK. Paul is a Chartered civil engineer with career spanning 17 years starting with the provision of infrastructure for private developers progressing through to managing multi-million pound, multi-disciplinary flood risk management projects for Environment Agency Wales. Prior to joining WHS he was the Team Leader of a ten-strong river engineering and modelling team. Paul says “The WHS team stood out to me as being incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their work. I’m really looking forward to working with them and assisting with the continued success and growth of the business”.

WHS appoints a new Flood Risk Consultant to support the expansion of our floods team. Melissa joins WHS from Hyder Consulting. A member of CIWEM she has experience of environmental and engineering consultancy specialising in flood risk assessment and modelling.

WHS appoints Daniel Farrow as a Hydrometric Consultant within our Dundee office to meet the rapidly increasing demand for our field services in Scotland and the north of England. Previously with Mouchels, Dan’s background is the provisioning of and management of hydrometric networks to support site investigations and has worked on many projects both in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
