Professor Alan Jenkins BSc (Hons) PhD

Professor Jenkins sits on the board of directors for Wallingford HydroSolutions, and is the Science Director of the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology's Water Programme. He is Hydrological Advisor to the UK Government, Chair of the UK Inter-Departmental Committee on Hydrology and the UK International Hydrology Programme Committee, the UK member of the WMO Hydrology Programme and is currently Chair of EurAqua - the European Network of Freshwater Research Organisations. His primary role within WHS is a liaison role with the parent organisation, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

Professor Jenkins is also the author of over 90 ISI journal papers and over 130 reports. His research focus lies in hydrochemical modelling, in particular in the development of models for predicting the impact of air pollution on soils and surface waters. He has worked for many years to develop and improve the MAGIC (Model of Acidification of Groundwater In Catchment) model and this now forms a focus for the assessment of the efficacy of International agreement on emission reductions.

Professor Jenkins is currently the Chairman of a UN-ECE Joint Expert Group on Dynamic Modelling of Air Pollution Impacts, reporting to the Working Group on Effects of the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution. His PhD involved the development of a dynamic simulation model for sanitary indicator bacteria in rivers and he maintains a research interest in this field, particularly with respect to bathing water status. More widely, he has established major experimental and monitoring studies both in the UK and further afield (Nepal and India) to assess and quantify hydrochemical pathways in relation to anthropogenic influences. The development of 'global change' as a research area also provided him with an opportunity to pursue his interest in large scale ecosystem manipulation experiments.
