Dr Alan Gustard BSc (Hons) PhD

Alan Gustard gained a PhD in hydrology from the University of Lancaster in 1981, specialised in low flow research and established the leading international research group in low flow research and applications. As head of the flow regimes section of CEH, the then Institute of Hydrology, he managed a number of research projects in the area of low flow hydrology and hydro-ecology in the UK, mainland Europe and in developing countries.

In 1994 Alan was appointed Head of the Water Resources and Environment Division of the Institute, responsible for 35 staff specialising in water resources, low flows, surface groundwater interaction, in-stream and wetland ecology and the design and operation of national and international data bases. He led the CEH water resources research and development partnership with the Environment Agency of England and Wales and coordinated EU projects in sustainable water resources, hydropower design and capacity building in Eastern Europe. He was appointed Deputy Director of CEH Wallingford (formerly - Institute of Hydrology) in 2000 and a CEH research Fellow in 2003.

Alan has been very active in international hydrology and initiated and directed the global FRIEND programme of UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme and was elected President of the Surface Water Commission of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences in 1999. In 2003 he was awarded the prestigious International Hydrology Prize by IAHS, UNESCO and WMO for his outstanding contribution to hydrological sciences, becoming only the second UK hydrologist to receive the award.
